We’re marking the end of our seven-part National SuDS Standard series by looking at Standard 7: Construction, Operation, Maintenance, Decommissioning & Structural Integrity.
So, your SuDS design looks great on paper. But will it still work in 10 years’ time?
Standard 7 requires designs that account for construction impacts, long-term maintenance, structural integrity and access for inspection. Clear maintenance plans are essential!
Why This Matters:
Even the best designed SuDS can fail if construction-phase protection, long-term maintenance and structural integrity aren’t fully considered.
Authorities, water companies and SABs expect clear evidence that systems will function for their entire design life. If maintenance access isn’t designed in, adoption may be refused, leaving developers with long-term liabilities.
Construction Phase Risks:
Poor construction controls can damage infiltration systems, clog features, or compromise performance leading to costly remediation and reputational risk.
How to Mitigate Risk:
· Providing sediment forebays in ponds to simplify maintenance.
· Designing wide, safe access paths for maintenance vehicles.
· Ensuring geocellular tanks include accessible inspection points.
· Implement a robust construction phase plan that ensures appropriate. measures are taken to manage runoff during construction.
What You Need to Know:
Design systems that can be built without damage (e.g. protection during construction), accessed safely and maintained over the lifecycle. Provide clear Operation & Maintenance manuals, access routes and sediment management strategies.
Allocate responsibilities, budgets and long-term management arrangements early. Adoption bodies require clarity on cost, liability and inspection needs. Poor access or unclear ownership often blocks adoption.
