RAB recently designed and delivered a game-style tabletop exercise for a public sector client to explore operational command-level decision making in response to a wildfire scenario.
Aiming to validate their Incident Response Plan, the immersive half-day exercise provided an opportunity for staff to practice decision making, roles and responsibilities and operational resource allocation. This was led by our Resilience Consultant, Laura McGuire.
The scenario detailed a fast-moving wildfire following a UK record-breaking heatwave, spreading rapidly towards a critical national infrastructure site. Participants deployed their limited resources on a site map using figures and tokens to represent what they had available. By physically positioning the figures, the two groups could visualise resource distribution, identify gaps, and discuss strategies in a tangible, engaging way.

Why Serious Game?
A serious game is a dynamic, scenario-based simulation that uses gameplay to explore people’s decisions, actions, and processes. This format encourages greater interaction and immersion, helping participants engage more deeply and explore options without the risk of real-world consequences.
This was the first time operational personnel have been exercised using this format and this was very well received by both the client and the participants. Feedback included:
“It’s much easier to get involved and discuss approaches together in a less-formal setting”
“Liked the exercise methods used”
“I liked being able to map out the scenario and our actions. Very interactive and allowed more learning to come out of it.”
Observations and participant feedback will now be collated and presented in a post-exercise report to the client, drawing out conclusions and recommendations to strengthen response arrangements.
Our approach
We understand that learning is not a one size fits all approach. Each organisation and each participant will learn through an approach that works best for them. That’s why, at RAB, we have explored innovative approaches to provide an interactive and informative environment to best enhance resilience and emergency preparedness.
Serious game with us
Our team can design and deliver a tailored exercise to meet organisational needs, whether it is a discussion-based workshop, a full scenario simulation, or a Serious Game. We support organisations and businesses at every stage of the exercise, from planning and delivery through to observations and recommendations.
