Flood Insurance and Property Protection Discussed in Latest Groundwater Rising podcast
The autumn storm season appears to have started early this year, with the accompanying heavy rainfalls once again thrusting the thorny topic of climate change into the media spotlight. High water levels have already produced flooding events across many parts of the UK, and we are not yet in October.
The increase in frequency and intensity of flood events is an understandable concern for both home and business owners. Whilst a lot of focus (and rightly) has been on the development and testing of measures to mitigate the risk of property flooding from above ground flood risk sources, RAB’s role as a workstream lead on the development of strategies, equipment, and innovation to mitigate against the less understood groundwater flooding, can only aid in the development of Flood Performance Certificates (FPC’s). The potential importance and requirement for FPC’s in the future is likely to increase the adoption of Property Flood Resilience (PFR) measures as homeowners are incentivised to improve their flood performance.
The latest Groundwater Rising podcast focuses on the related and topical issue of Flood Insurance, with host Katie Hargrave-Smith discussing the subject with help from Dermot Kehoe from ‘Flood Re’ and Bernie Coughlin from Royton Insurance Services. They talk about what the current situation is for insuring properties affected by flooding and future best practices for both property owners, renters and insurance companies:
Insurance and Flooding: What You Need To Know
The latest podcast is part of a series of episodes produced by the team at Project Groundwater, which RAB have been involved with as Partner and Workstream Lead. Project Groundwater is a Defra funded programme designed to support communities in nine high-risk flood areas of the Chiltern Hills and Berkshire Downs. It is part of a wider £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programme managed by the Environment Agency. All the programmes will drive innovation in flood and coastal resilience and adaptation to a changing climate. Further details, including our appointment as Lead Partner on the Resilience Workstream, can be found in a news story we published in April last year:
