Crowd Crushing Simulation Exercise Validates the Importance of Emergency Preparedness

The increase in footfall from events, demonstrations and the associated risk scenarios, particularly in London, has thrust emergency preparedness and business continuity into the spotlight, with businesses and organisations evaluating how they manage unexpected scenarios and subsequent impacts.

One recent example involved the RAB Resilience Team developing and running a bespoke exercise for Borough Market. Our Team have a great relationship with Borough Market and recently helped them introduce new plans and procedures (discussed in a post earlier this year: RAB Deliver Emergency Response Plan for Iconic London Venue).

They now wanted to test and validate these plans, and asked us to create and run a bespoke exercise for their team. The exercise was delivered by way of a 1-day simulation, providing staff at Borough Market with an opportunity to thoroughly test their roles and responsibilities.

Bryan Nelson, Resilience Director at RAB said: “The engagement, energy and appetite from participants was extremely encouraging and the lessons identified will ensure the organisation continually develops its response arrangements. Furthermore, this latest piece of work with the Borough Market team demonstrates the importance of building long-term collaborative relationships with clients, allowing us to provide specialist skills to support their business and operation.”

Lucy Charles, Director of Operations at Borough Market echoed these comments: “At Borough Market we are focused on providing a unique experience for our visitors, with the highest safety standards. RAB has a proven track record of delivering emergency management and business continuity services, and we are delighted with the exercise and simulation they developed for the team.”
