The team at RAB were delighted to hear that the funding window for the new Environment Agency (EA) Natural Flood Management programme (NFM) is now open. The funding scheme supports a holistic approach combining NFM with Property Flood Resilience (PFR), alongside more traditional measures.
NFM works best within 5 km upstream of at-risk communities, using natural processes to protect, restore, and mimic the natural functions of catchments, floodplains and the coast to slow and store water. The combined effect is to reduce the risk of flooding. Measures can include:
- Soil and land management
- River and floodplain management
- Woodland management
- Run-off management
- Coast and estuary management
NFM measures can also provide wider benefits including:
- Enhancing habitats and biodiversity
- Improving water quality and availability of drinking water
- Improving carbon capture
- Boosting health and wellbeing
More information on the NFM programme can be found on the EA website: Natural flood management programme – GOV.UK
Funding open to Risk Management Authorities (RMAs) and non-RMAs, including charities, Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and landowners. Lead organisations can deliver catchment-wide solutions too.
