A Wake-Up Call for Business Resilience – The Jaguar Land Rover Cyber Attack

A cyber attack at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has forced the company to take vital IT systems offline, significantly impacting car sales and production. For over two weeks, manufacturing and production has halted at three major car factories within the UK – and will not resume at least until 24th September.

This attack – described as the most severe crisis for the automotive sector since the Covid-19 pandemic – is also reported to be more complex and disruptive than those seen earlier this year at Marks and Spencer and the Co-op. The attack has crippled the JLR wider supplier chain and as production freezes continue, the survival of the wider supply chain is under threat. Survival is reported to be unlikely without government support. Trade union Unite have since called for the government to issue a furlough scheme so the industry can recover.

This crisis underscores the critical importance for cyber security with business continuity management (BCM) to shield business functions. By implementing cyber security measures alongside comprehensive staff training, businesses can safeguard against data loss, business disruptions, and accelerate recovery. A proactive strategy not only protects an organisation’s reputation but also ensures the longevity of revenue streams.

At RAB, we recognise the urgency of staying ahead of cyber threats. We have conducted several business continuity exercises, including a public sector client scenario and an internal cyber-attack simulation. These exercises have not only strengthened our own resilience but for our clients – ensuring that when challenges arise, operations simply don’t just continue as usual, they adapt and improve.

Our practitioners, certified with the BCI (CBCI), can support you to validate your business continuity plan through staff training, exercises and produce a post-exercise report that can be used as a basis to further your organisation’s business continuity.

Taking on solutions today brings a more resilient tomorrow.
