2024 Review: Close Encounters of the Manmade Kind…

In our previous post we took a look back at some of the more interesting wildlife encounters that our asset inspectors came across in 2024: 2024 Review: The Importance of Making Friends with the Locals…

Working in both urban and remote locations means we also frequently stumble across a wide range of manmade objects, some of which are meant to be there and others which are clearly not! In the second part of our 2024 review we are going to show you some of these as recorded by our inspectors and engineers while working out in the field:

  • Starting with an unusual take on finding the perfect parking spot… In all honesty we have no idea how they managed to get the car into this position, given it was quite a way from the nearest road! This was spotted by David at Spalding embankment in May.

Next up is Wallasea Island’s Jubilee marsh which opened in 2015 and was built using the clay excavated during the Elizabeth line construction. There is a piece of ‘Victoria’ (one of the Crossrail tunnelling machines) on display. This was seen by Tom and Will in October.

  • A more urban encounter this time, and a possible Banksy? Pete stumbled across this in East Suffolk in March while delivering training for the council.

  • Something more noisy next, fighter jets seen at RAF Mildenhall by Joe and Tom in August.

  • A view from afar with this stunning image of marshlands at Shotley Gate in February shared by Joe and Tom. Note Felixstowe Port in the distance on the other side of the estuary.

  • And finally, before everyone thinks it is all fun and games working outside in the wonderful British countryside, our engineers and inspectors want to point out that they work in all weathers… including a typical Thursday and Friday in February!

  • Which leads to issues such as this: a near complete bridge blockage in Suffolk identified in February where a tree and root wad have been snagged by a services pipe.
