RAB are committed to supporting the career development and progression of all our staff, and this starts from the moment new team members are recruited.
We regularly attend recruitment fairs and career opportunity events, where team members are on hand to promote RAB and the exciting opportunities for people who enjoy analysing engineering or scientific problems, and using their judgement to find innovative solutions.
One recent example was the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Careers Expo at the University of Bedfordshire. Laura, one of our Resilience Consultants, was understandably delighted to attend the event on behalf of RAB given that she completed her Environmental Management MSc at the university!
Laura took part in a panel discussion with other alumni and a range of employers, sharing her experience on how she started her career in STEM. This included volunteering with the British Red Cross for over 4 years and beginning her journey with RAB as an assistant resilience consultant on a part time basis whilst completing her masters.
The event was a huge success, as Laura commented: “It was great to chat to current students and showcase the variety of clients we work with and projects we undertake. Many students were unaware of this as a career option and were super interested in learning more!”
Laura also shared some of her top career tips with the current students. These include:
- Do not wait to contact potential employers – even if they are not hiring, still contact them!
- Consider volunteering in the sector you want to work in – increases employability and a great way to get experience
- Use LinkedIn to connect with individuals in jobs you are interested / organisations you would like to work for- and to stay up to date with the industry – build your profile!
- And remember, grades do not define your success. You define your success!
