RAB’s Journey to Net Zero
The activities of a company have an environmental impact at the local, national and global levels. We have a duty to understand the importance of sustainability in protecting and preserving our environment and put in place measures to manage the impact of all of our operations.
Our journey towards reducing our environmental impact and ultimately achieving net zero emissions began with a commitment from our management team, including our directors. Once this commitment was established, we initiated concrete actions to put our plans into motion.
As a company, we recognised the importance of creating and implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS). This system not only reduces our impact on the environment by promoting good environmental practices but also provides assurance to our staff, our customers, suppliers, and stakeholders that we take our environmental commitment seriously.
Creating and implementing an EMS that meets the requirements of ISO 14001 involved numerous steps. A summary of the main steps is presented in the infographic below.
In 2022, we became ISO 14001 certified. Since then, we have ensured that we not only maintain our EMS but also take additional steps to continuously improve our environmental performance and maintain environmentally responsible practices.
Sustainability is embedded in our professional flood risk and resilience services. Every member of our team is dedicated to our Integrated Management System and has made individual environmental pledges to contribute to our environmental vision.
After implementing our EMS, our next step was to commit to achieving net zero emissions and creating our net zero carbon reduction plan. As a company, we have proactively made environmental commitments with:
- West Midlands Net Zero Business Pledge which requires us to become a net zero company by 2041.
- SME Climate Hub which requires us to become a net zero company by 2040 and halve our emissions by 2030.
Although the target with these voluntary pledges commits us to become carbon net zero by 2040/2041, we have made our individual commitment as a company to achieve net zero by 2035.
Understanding and monitoring our Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions has been an essential part of our journey. This process has allowed us to set not only annual environmental objectives but also long-term goals that will enable us to achieve net zero emissions and fully comprehend our path to net zero.
Over time, as we gain a better understanding of our emissions and take further actions as a company and as individuals, we hope our clients, customers, stakeholders, and even individuals will join us on this journey towards a sustainable future.
