RAB Provides SuDS Solution and Strategy for New Commercial Development

The team at RAB are increasingly being commissioned by clients to provide surface water drainage strategies for commercial development projects including new builds, conversions and expansions.

One recent example was a new commercial development at Manor Farm near Beachampton in Buckinghamshire. The client chose RAB because of our expertise in sustainable drainage solutions (SuDS) and experience providing strategies that reduce the environmental impact, improve efficiency, and comply with local policy.

Some of the aspects of this project and summary of our approach are detailed below:

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS): We integrated features into the SuDS strategy that managed run-off while also enhancing biodiversity and improving water quality. This eco-focused approach incorporated filter drains, a detention basin, and a flow control chamber to regulate the discharge rate and reduce the risk of flooding to properties and land downstream of the site.

Climate-Resilient Design: Factoring in climate change and urban creep, the drainage system can accommodate a +40% climate change allowance and 10% hardstanding area increase (urban creep), securing the infrastructure against future challenges. For businesses considering expansion, this is a strong example of forward-thinking design – enhancing resilience and meeting regulatory expectations.

Minimal Maintenance, Maximum Impact: A custom maintenance plan ensures long-term functionality with low upkeep. We specified schedules for sediment clearance, vegetation management, and regular inspections, allowing the system to run efficiently with minimal intervention.

Compliance with Best Practices: Adhering to the latest CIRIA SuDS Manual, our approach integrates seamlessly into the environment, supporting both the client’s commercial objectives and the SuDS requirements of the Buckinghamshire County Council.

The project successfully went through the planning condition discharge phase in October 2024, with our client being very satisfied with the result and allowing the commercial project to be completed.
